Emma Stone husband, Dave McCary, is an Emmy-nominated writer and producer but he is still one of the more low-key partners in Hollywood due to the couple’s private relationship.
The Kinds of Kindness star has been in a relationship with the former Saturday Night Live writer since 2016 but the pair rarely step out together in public. That said, McCary and Stone have been working together increasingly often, including in 2024 movie A Real Pain — which the couple produced together — so their red carpet appearances are becoming more common.
We got a rare glimpse into their marriage when McCary proudly walked the red carpet with his wife throughout the 2024 awards season, even sharing a kiss with his wife when Stone won the Best Actress award at the 2024 Oscars for her role in Poor Things. Taking the stage, Stone gave McCary sweet shoutout. “I want to thank my family, my mom, my brother Spencer, my dad, my husband, Dave, I love you so much,” Stone said.

Who is Emma Stone’s husband, Dave McCary?
McCary is an accomplished and Emmy-nominated writer, director and producer. Stone and McCary have been married since 2020 and share one daughter.
McCary worked as a producer on Problemistaand executive produced The Curse and A Real Pain alongside Stone. He also has the title of feature film director under his belt with his 2017 film Brigsy Bear.
McCary formerly served as a writer and segment director on Saturday Night Live between 2013 to 2018. He joined the show with childhood friend Kyle Mooney and comedian Beck Bennet in 2013, six years after the trio came together to form the sketch comedy group Good Neighbor.
McCary grew up in Southern California and Wisconsin
McCary was born in San Diego and spent his early childhood in Southern California, where he first met Mooney. He went on to attend high school in Monroe, Wisconsin. Per Wisconsin’s The Capital Times, McCary’s mom was based in Wisconsin while his dad lived in San Diego.
Stone and McCary Met at Saturday Night Live
Stone and McCary’s romance began when they first met in December 2016 on the set of Saturday Night Live. At the time, Stone was hosting the show for the third time while McCary was the segment director. One of the skits for the night, titled “Wells for Boys,” was written by McCary and starred Stone.
Their relationship went public in October 2017
Almost a year later, in October 2017, reports confirmed that Stone and McCary were together. According to Page Six, they were even spotted kissing at an SNL after-party in May after Stone guest-starred in an episode.
McCary proposed to Stone at the SNL offices in December 2019
On Dec. 4, 2019, McCary shared on Instagram that he popped the question to Stone by sharing a selfie of them. In addition to their beaming smiles, Stone is also showing off her brand-new pearl ring to the camera. That month, a source told People that the couple “got a home together in Malibu over the summer.”
“Dave proposed at the offices where they first met at [NBC’s Manhattan HQ] 30 Rock,” a source toldPage Six of their big moment in 2021. “No one was there and by all accounts, it was very romantic.”
A year before they got engaged, Stone opened up about wanting to get married and start a family in an August 2018 interview with Elle. “As a teenager, I was like, I’m never getting married, I’m never having kids. And then I got older and I was like, I really want to get married, I really want to have kids,” she said.
Stone and McCary got married in 2020
After postponing their wedding due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Stone and McCary tied the knot in a secret ceremony sometime in 2020. At the time, wedding rumors were swirling after they were spotted wearing matching gold bands. While the couple have never shared photos from their wedding, Stone did rewear her wedding after-party dress at the 2022 Met Gala.
Stone & McCary’s daughter was born in March 2021
Not long after their marriage confirmation in September 2020, Stone and McCary became parents for the first time when the Oscar winner welcomed their daughter, Louise Jean McCary, in 2021. “Emma and Dave have a great marriage and both wanted a child,” a source told People after the baby was born. “They are a very grounded and private couple and were ready for a family.”
The following month, Us Weekly reported that becoming parents had improved their relationship. “Having a baby has brought them closer in a way they never expected,” a source said, adding that McCary is “hands-on and helping with their daughter.”
Though the couple keep their daughter out of the public eye, she did get a shoutout in Stone’s 2024 Academy Awards speech when she thanked her saying, “My daughter, who’s gonna be 3 in three days and has turned our lives technicolor. I love you bigger than the whole sky, my girl.”
McCary was Stone’s date at the Oscars, SAG Awards, and more
While the two have remained quite private over the years, McCary has quietly supported Stone in many events over the years. At the 2019 Screen Actors Guild Awards, for example, they attended their first awards show together. Later that year, they were also spotted attending the 2019 Oscars together.
Fast forward to 2024, McCary joined Stone at the Golden Globes, where she gave him a shoutout when she won the Best Actress award for her role in Poor Things. “Dave, I have to start with you really quickly. I love you very much, thank you for everything,” she said.
They also attended the Los Angeles premiere of The Curse in January and the 2024 Oscars in March. McCary was by Stone’s side during the premiere of Kinds of Kindness in New York in June and the couple posed together on the red carpet at the New York Film Festival on Oct. 5 to celebrate A Real Pain, which stars Kieran Culkin and Jesse Eisenberg.
Stone and McCary own a production company together
In August 2020, Stone and McCary launched a film and TV production company called Fruit Tree in partnership with A24, according to Deadline.

The couple live in New York, Texas and Los Angeles
During their relationship, Stone and McCary have owned homes in New York City, Los Angeles, Malibu and Texas.
In 2021, Stone sold her condo in NYC’s West Village — which she bought a year before meeting McCary — and purchased a home in Austin, Texas, per House Beautiful. The following year, the couple sold their Malibu home while holding on a home in Beverly Hills, which they listed in January. Some reports say they may have listed their Texas home.
